Finding Your Zone Handout – November 18, 2005 "Finding Your Zone" - Zone Meeting |
Precision Agriculture got its start in the early 90’s after GPS and computer technology
became more affordable. PA got a jump start in the Midwest. Because of higher value crops,
producers could afford expensive equipment and services to collect data and more precisely apply
inputs. Ten years later we are finally seeing a push for this technology here in Montana, a low
production region compared to the rest of the US. One of the biggest problems with PA is the
amount of equipment, training and support that is required to be a complete PA operation. Very
few managers have the time or resources to tackle such a task. Precision Crop Management has all
the tools, knowledge and resources necessary to offer a complete PA program to anyone. For PA to
be successful, there needs to be history of production. In the past this took at least 3 years of
good yield data off of a combine to achieve. We have found a work around with Satellite imagery.
Satellite imagery gives us this instant history of production, allowing for PA strategies to be
implemented immediately without the client ever owning or operating a piece of equipment. The
client also doesn’t have to have a new variable rate air drill either. There are spreader trucks
that are capable of varying the rate of nitrogen. The bottom line is that PA is here and very
affordable for everyone to try or implement on their entire operation.
